CEDRO

Centro de Información y Educación para la Prevención del Abuso de Drogas is a Peruvian, private non profit institution created in 1986, whose aim is to promote education and information about the different aspects of the drug problem. CEDRO wants to achieve a comprehensive confrontation to the drug problem in all its dimensions, from production to trafficking and consumption: the goal is to create an awareness at all levels of society of the magnitude of the problem, and mostly reach the public opinion.

CEDRO's mission is to sensitize and inform populations at the local, national and international level, on the risks of drugs on individuals, and their environment. 

One of CEDRO's many assignments is to run 6 shelters for children at risk. Three of them are based in the capital. There are about sixty five children, including 18 girls, who have been saved from the streets of Lima, and receive the attention needed to lead a healthy adult life.

Escuela de Vida

Centro de Rehabilitación de Drogadependiente "Escuela de Vida" has its offices in the center of Lima, and two treatment facilities in the outskirts of the capital, through which it provides assistance to 65 men aged 18 to 55. While the men are in treatment, their families are allowed to visit them once a month. However a large part of the success of this institution relies on mandatory family commitment in attending weekly therapy sessions in the downtown office. There is also a drug prevention work done with the other family members, as well as a program raising emotional awareness to facilitate acceptance of the resident back into the family.

Escuela de Vida runs on a very tight budget, and relies on donations for any improvement of its facilities. A brief analysis lead to the conclusion that the facility needs to welcome 75 persons in order to become financial independent. It currently welcomes 55 men. The expansion requires an investment of US$ 35,000.

CIMA

Centro de Integración de Menores en Abandono

based in Cieneguilla, Perú, in the outskirts of Lima

CIMA provides assistance to 100 street boys aged 8 to 18, helping them return to their homes and reintegrate into society. The boys were picked up from the streets of Lima by the CIMA staff or referred by other organizations. They fled their homes following abuse and almost all have experienced drug problems and were members of gangs.

CIMA gives them a home and answers to immediate needs such as affection, care, food, health, education and spiritual support. There is an 80% success rate and over 1,800 boys have successfully adjusted to society after their life at CIMA. 

A team of 45 specialists and staff see these boys grow out of abuse and adjust to healthy living. There are always needs when raising children. Consider becoming involved...
